Green smoothies have been known for quite a while as a detox drink. But, do we know why? Green smoothies are always made out of many vegetables and fruits, that makes the smoothie high in phytonutrients. Phytonutrients are small components of plant cells that even though they have no nutritional value for humans (as to say, calories) they have many, many healthy benefits when consumed. Remember when we talked about the anthocyanins in blueberries on day 1 of the smoothie challenge? Anthocyanins are just one of the many beneficial particles plants provide us, maybe you have heard about flavonoids, carotenoids, and lutein amongst many others.

So this is what makes green smoothies so healthy. These chemicals have been proven to provide antioxidant functions by protection DNA from damaging,they boost the immune system, plus they provide protective factors for common diseases like atherosclerosis. That’s a lot of info right? Well imagine ALL that, plus a high dose of fiber, a good portion of your daily fruit and veggies, a boost of energy, and a low calorie meal in just on glass of green smoothie! Now, who’s up for their green smoothie?

Green Smoothie Power (Serves 2 Big glasses: yeah you can share it at home!)

1/2 Carrot (Medium Size)
1 Banana
1 ripened Mango (the sweetest you can find – medium size)
3 cups of spinach
1/2 cup of sweet orange juice

Directions:

1. Squeeze the orange juice first (if you don’t have home made already)

2. Wash all the vegetables and peel the mango

3. Add all ingredients to the blender and blend. Feel free to add more juice for a more liquid consistency, or even sweetness. Make sure your orange juice and mango are sweet other wise if it’s your first time with a green smoothie you might not enjoy it that much :)
